Free Johnson-Su workshop in Northfield! Wednesday 11/4 @ 10am

Example of Johnson-Su compost system

What happens inside a Johnson-Su composter after one year?

Join us for a hands-on workshop exploring Johnson-Su composting, a static, no-turn composting method designed to produce biologically rich compost.

We’ll briefly explore how compost helps build healthy, biologically active soils, supports farmers, and protects water quality. We’ll also introduce the “what, why, and how” of Johnson-Su composting, including what makes this approach different from other composting methods. Then we’ll open up a Johnson-Su system that was built and filled last fall, harvest some of the finished compost, and take a closer look at its biology under the microscope.

Whether you’re a farmer, gardener, composter, soil enthusiast, or simply curious about what’s happening inside a compost pile, this is a chance to see the process—and the finished product—up close.

Have some compost at home and curious about its biology? Bring along a sample and we’ll take a look!

Johnson-Su Composting: One Year Later

No previous Johnson-Su or microscopy experience necessary, and you do not need to have attended last year’s workshop.

Want to get your hands dirty? We’re also considering an optional extended session after lunch to refill the Johnson-Su system for another cycle. When you register for the morning workshop, let us know if you’d be interested in staying to help refill the system.

Co-organized by the Composting Association of Vermont (CAV) and Vermont Healthy Soils Coalition, this free workshop is part of CAV’s Soil Builders Program.

Know your farmer. Know your food. Know your compost.

The workshop is free and open to all. Registration is encouraged.
